We wanted to see all the country had to offer while also being mindful of the safety concerns due to Iceland’s challenging winter conditions, especially for first-time visitors.

After weighing the pros and cons, we decided on November. While this surprised many, I can confidently say post-trip that it was the best decision we made.

We saw everything we’d hoped for and more, enjoying every moment without stress or fear.

1. Witness the Northern Lights / Lady Aurora

We managed to see the Northern Lights, and it was an incredible experience! Seeing the green lights dance across the dark sky amidst the stars was like a dream come true. This spectacle is only possible during the darker months, which rules out the summer when there’s almost constant daylight. Catching the Aurora Borealis can be tricky, but with a bit of patience and good advice, we were lucky enough to witness it on our fifth day.

2. Sufficient daylight

Even though November brings longer nights, there’s still plenty of daylight. You can expect around six hours of sunlight, which gradually decreases until mid-December and doesn’t return to six hours until late January. With careful planning, you can avoid driving in the dark, which can be daunting and dangerous for the inexperienced.

3. Ice Caves – Winter Fairy Tale

Winter in Iceland feels like a fairy tale, especially when you embark on an ice cave tour. Our excursion with Ice Explorers was unforgettable. We traversed off-road to a glacier in Iceland’s largest super jeep, then donned safety equipment to enter the ice wonderland. It felt like a scene from Frozen. Sadly, these tours aren’t possible during summer when the caves are prone to flooding or collapse.

Furthermore, you can enjoy the huge diamonds and icebergs at the Jökulsarlon lagoon during summer as well, although they are much more stunning and breathtaking during winter.

4. Milder weather

I won’t sugarcoat it, Icelandic winters can be tough. However, November’s weather is quite manageable, even enjoyable. We experienced strong winds in the evenings, but overall, we were fortunate with the weather. Occasional snowfall only added to the beauty. Despite it being winter, the waterfalls weren’t frozen, and we enjoyed the contrast of green landscapes against the white scenery.

5. Low season

While it seems there’s no ‘low season’ in Iceland anymore, November definitely felt less crowded. We even had some accommodations all to ourselves. Initially, I’d excluded the Blue Lagoon from our itinerary due to potential crowds, but we decided on a spontaneous visit for some relaxation before our journey home. We arrived on a Friday afternoon and found it pleasantly uncrowded, even finding some corners entirely to ourselves. It was truly romantic and rejuvenating.

In conclusion, visiting Iceland in November offers a unique and rewarding experience. The chance to witness the Northern Lights, explore enchanting ice caves, and enjoy the country’s stunning landscapes in relative solitude far outweighs any potential challenges posed by the winter weather.

But remember, while our trip was filled with unforgettable moments, it’s essential to stay informed and prepared for changing conditions. Pack suitable clothing, plan your itinerary carefully, and always stay updated with local weather advisories.

The magic of Iceland in November is waiting for you, so why not make it your next adventure? We hope this guide has given you a clearer idea of what to expect and helps you make the most of your trip.

When planning our 10-day Ring Road itinerary in Iceland, we pondered over the ideal time to visit.
